Kirklees Subaqua Club History

Kirklees Subaqua Club was founded November 1974 just at the beginning of the North Sea Oil bonanza. The club was formed in an unusual way when the government reformed the boundaries of local authorities and Spen Valley was amalgamated with Huddersfield, and the new unitary area was named Kirklees.

The Education Authority in Kirklees wishing to utilize and raise finance for the schools introduced night school classes for many sports and pastimes, among which were classes for introduction to scuba diving theory run by BSAC instructors. Myself and my wife Margaret decided to go. we started at night school, attended lectures and sat exams and as we showed a lot of interest the instructors asked if we were interested in the practical lessons we could use spenborough pool Saturday mornings 6am to 7am.

We duly attended these practical lessons and did all the pool training and by now we had gone as far as we could go with the pool training. The next step was to join a BSAC branch or form our own. The ten people who attended theory and pool training decided to form a branch and carry on with the training according to BSAC rules and thus Kirklees SubAqua Club Branch 0836 was born.

Since then club members have dived every shore & offshore island around the uk. Kirklees SubAqua Club has organized club dives to cuba, America , Burma, Thailand, Africa, Cypruss, Malta, Spain and to Egypt. The Club organises everything from shore based holidays to live-aboards. We are a very friendly, vibrant & enthusiastic club.

Over the years, the club has flourished and now boasts a healthy membership of over 50 divers of all grades and skill levels. We have 5 Nationally Qualified Instructors who joined the club at entry level, worked their way through the various dive qualifications and are now themselves teaching others to SCUBA Dive.

The Club has 3 boats available for use on Club Dives and recently we have began using and experimenting with re-breather technology. Club Dives within the U.K are being organised at least three times a month with a minimum of two international trips every year.

Outside of the Diving Season, the club makes use of a local swimming pool where new members receive extensive training in all aspects of SCUBA Diving in a safe and (relatively !) warm environment. With most of the Sheltered Water (Pool) training done during the winter months, we can ensure that all new members are ready for the challenge of open water once the diving season picks up in the summer, (or early spring for the really eager divers !).

So, do we do other things besides SCUBA diving ??? Damn right we do !!..

The club meets every Wednesday evening for all classroom and pool training, after which we all gather at the local Water Hole (pub !) for the odd drink (or five !). We also regularly organise club social events suitable for the entire family, which gives everyone a chance to meet the non-diving friends and family of our club members. Social events can be organised by any member of the club and we actively encourage all members to get involved, it's one of the strengths of Kirklees SubAqua Club.

But You don't want to sit there all day reading about our club do you? (seriousley..do you ??)

Why not pay us a visit ?. Have a chat with some of the newer members of the club and some of the (really) old ones. We can even arrange a 'Try Dive' session for you in our pool, all you need is your swimming costume and we'll supply the rest of the SCUBA gear. A Try Dive will give you the opportunity to gain an insight into the world of SCUBA before you make any decisions about taking it up as a hobby. Kirklees Subaqua Club is within easy reach of Huddersfield, Leeds, Dewsbury and Wakefield. You can find out more about where we are located and how to contact us, in the aptly named How To Contact Us section. (click here to go there).

So what are you waiting for ??.. come to Kirklees Subaqua Club and discover the world of SUBA Diving !
